Cry with me

Solo exhibition | The artist village, Taipei

An encounter with the mourners and funeral dancers of Taiwan. Taiwan has a rich funeral tradition which includes many ceremonies and rituals. The mourners, in particular are fascinating.

These women, whose profession it is, are hired by the families to accompany the soul of the deceased to the other side. We see them, along with the dancers in their costumes and with their particular choreography, weeping and dancing weeks after the funeral, near the shrines of the dead or in the temples.
The video installation invites us to discover their world, we will see them and hear them prepare, rehearse, cry and dance, rehearsing, crying and dancing.

At the same time, in another empty space, with only the sound of the mourners as a backdrop, the artist presents a series of drawings inspired from the shrines and the funerary elements which exist in each shrine.
